Coconut Oil

Adding Omegas to your dog’s diet can be confusing. Salmon oil versus coconut oil? Which Omegas and why for your pet? Salmon oil is a great source of Omegas, but there are differences to consider.

One tablespoon of Salmon oil contains 4.6 g of Omega-3s. These Omegas help with dry skin, joint inflammation, eye health, and cognitive function. Though beneficial, Salmon Oil is a limited omega-3 source.

Coconut oil is quickly digested and contains medium-chain fatty acids. About 50 percent of these medium-chain fatty acids are Lauric Acid. Lauric acid helps strengthen the immune system. Coconut oil also contains Caprylic Acid and Capric Acid, which are natural antifungals, antivirals, and antibacterials. Coconut oil can increase the absorption of the B vitamins, A, D, E, K, beta-carotene, and some amino acids.  When fed daily, it is great at eliminating yeast. It works well to heal dry skin and dull coat.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS OF COCONUT OIL:

•Reduces allergic reactions
•Helps prevent joint breakdown
•Rehydrates the skin
•Helps prevent/control diabetes
•Helps balance metabolism and hormones
•Prevents and treats yeast and fungal infections
•Heals digestive disorders
•Improves digestion and nutrient absorption

Coconut oil has so many positives for dogs. We believe if fed daily as a preventive, you can reduce the chance of dry skin, skin infections, and joint inflammation. If used to treat yeast, it provides a holistic treatment that also strengthens the immune system.

Dogs can benefit from unrefined or virgin coconut oil, and dogs love the taste. It is important to start slowly, building up to the recommended dose. Coconut oil can cause detoxing symptoms as it kills harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites, yeasts, and fungus. Because of the detoxing side effects and the added omegas, you can have loose stool if not dosing correctly and giving too much too fast.

See dosing chart below:

coconut oil dosing chart

Start with the day 1-7 dose if your dog has a pretty solid belly. If they are prone to loose stool with changes in their diet, you can cut that initial dose in half for the first week, working up to the dose listed above over several weeks.

By far, coconut oil has many natural healing properties. The single most important is to strengthen the immune system. This is a game-changer for those who suffer from allergies. Building the immune system helps eliminate allergic reactions for those dogs that are prone to them.

NOTE: Coconut oil should be colorless when liquid (above 76 degrees) and solid white when under 75 degrees.
